Regulating Anger: Cognitive, Behavioral, and Affective Pathways Workshop
Friday, May 4, 2018, Time 11:00am-2:00pm
There is little disagreement that anger is pervasive and historically important in human relations. Anger has a place in one's emotional repertoire but it can clearly become maladaptive. This workshop does locate anger in psychiatric diagnoses but goes much further in recognizing complex and subtle types of anger or anger disorders as reflected in literature and psychology. In the case of the latter, a new generation of tests allows us to tap into many basic parameters as well as expression styles of anger from the intermittent explosive to the passive-aggressive types. For such conditions, treatment options will be outlined, with particular demonstrations and illustrations of techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) - an approach well supported by meta-analytic evidence. Furthermore, it will be shown that CBT can be significantly enhanced and enriched into an integrative program that draws from several schools of therapy, while not losing sight of cultural and individual differences.
