Sunday Funday with MSF
Sunday, Sept 18, 2016 at Laurie Auditorium (Trinity University) will be a momentous day for the Mind Science Foundation. Please join us as we have a number of events that you will fire up your neurons and build the brain loving community of San Antonio.
At 5:30pm, we will host our inaugural Brain Science Festival (#brainfest) in the lobby of the Laurie Auditorium. We recruited area undergraduates (in the blue MSF shirts) to lead us through some games and brain busters to learn about the different lobes of the brain and the senses. You will be challenged to use your creative skills to problem solve and master your mind. Make sure you stop by the table with bright balloons to pick up your BrainFest passport so you can get your stamps and be entered to win in a number of contests. Make sure you bring your friends so you challenge them. Which one of you will get the most correct in the Stroop Test or be the first to solve the rope trick?
At 6:30pm, we will begin our lecture with an introduction by Executive Director, Meriam Good. We are in the midst of some exciting times at headquarters. We will have a fun announcement on Sunday that will lead us into the next steps for MSF. You better be there or follow us on social media (#gutchurn) so you don’t miss it! This lecture will not be recorded.
Jad Abumrad will then take the stage to delight and educate you with how he composes his masterpiece stories. Jad is the creator and host of NPR’s very successful podcast Radiolab. He describes “gut churn” as the radical uncertainty that’s a core part of any creative process that really pushes the envelope. When you are entering unknown territory and working without a map! Jad will use examples from Radiolab’s own evolution and share the benefits of negative feedback and how we can look out for signs that can help guide our creative work. (Even when it hurts!)
This will be a great exciting event in the 2016 Distinguished Speaker Series lineup and is not to be missed. In addition, the fall promises to be back in session – a full course of fun with neuroscience and consciousness. In October, we will announce the lineup for 2017 as well. Hold onto your hats!
Next week, we will have a guest blogger – a psychology Masters student at UTSA who will take a popular Pixar movie and show how emotions aren’t always what they seem. Stay tuned!
