A New Myth for Our Future (Part 1 of 4)

We shape the future through the stories we tell about what reality is and what’s possible. Our minds’ “implicit stories” shape our reality — both individually and in turn, society as a whole. Building “scenarios” — alternative stories of the future — can be a powerful tool to make strategic changes in one’s life. This can not only inform us about what is going on below the level of consciousness in the shaping of our own lives, but what futures might be possible for society as a whole.

Betty Sue Flowers, Ph.D., is a writer, editor, and international business consultant, with publications ranging from poetry therapy to human rights, including two books of poetry and four television tie-in books with Bill Moyers. She has served as a moderator for executive seminars at the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, consultant for NASA and CIA, and editor of scenarios for Shell International in London and the Hague, the OAS, the University of Oxford, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in Geneva. Before moving to New York City in 2009, Flowers served as Director of the Johnson Presidential Library and Museum, and as a professor, Director of the Interdisciplinary Honors Program, Director of Creative Writing, and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
